How Strep Throat is Diagnosed: What to Expect at the Doctor's Office

Child-with-Strept-Throat-Examined-by-Pediatrician

Strep throat is unpleasant and can cause your child pain and discomfort. Unfortunately, it can spread or lead to scarlet fever, among other issues. Therefore, seeking out treatment for your kid's condition with one of our pediatric specialists at Mid Kansas Pediatric Associates, serving Wichita & Derby, KS, and the nearby regions, is beneficial. What can you expect during the diagnostic process?

Talking to You About Symptoms

Depending on your child's age and comfort level with the doctor, we'll ask either you or them about the symptoms they're experiencing. We'll want to know if a fever exists and how long the issue has lasted.

Part of your treatment also involves knowing your child's medical history so we can determine whether this is a recurring problem.

Examining Your Child

Examining your little one's throat is the next portion of the examination at one of our offices, serving Wichita & Derby, KS, and the neighboring communities. This consists of a pediatric specialist looking into your child's mouth with a light to look for any redness or white patches. A practitioner will also feel your child's lymph nodes to determine if they're swollen.

Conducting a Strep Test

A strep test is one test we may use to confirm a suspected strep throat case. For this test, a practitioner will use a sterile swab to take a sample from your little one's throat. The test will then be sent to the lab to look for strep bacteria in the throat.

If your child has a persistent sore throat, it's worth scheduling a visit with a pediatric specialist at Mid Kansas Pediatric Associates, serving Wichita and Derby, KS, and the surrounding areas. We can then determine whether your child has strep and provide the necessary treatment to prevent complications.
