As a parent, you’ll be making decisions constantly – all of which are important and can leave you overwhelmed trying to make the right one. One of these decisions is whether to breastfeed or use formula. To help you make an informed decision, Mid Kansas Pediatric Associates of Wichita and Derby, KS, share some of the many reasons breastfeeding is best for both the baby and mom below.
As a mother, you want to do everything you can to protect your baby and keep them healthy. While you're carrying your little one, you are protecting them in many ways. Not only are they inside a protective covering, but you also pass on antibodies that protect them when they first enter the world.
Choosing to breastfeed means choosing to extend that protection. Breast milk consists of many components that protect against viruses, bacteria, infections, and diseases.
Breast milk also contains probiotics, anti-inflammatory properties, and natural hormones that have proven to:
In short, it provides a natural and effective way to continue protecting your little one after they are born.
Mom can also benefit in many ways – one of the first being the bonding experience. Nursing allows for a unique and very special way for mothers to bond with their new baby, and give you some additional one-on-one time with them.
Additionally, nursing has proven effective in helping mothers recover more quickly, lose weight from pregnancy, and reduce the risk of high blood pressure, some types of cancer, and type 2 diabetes.
It’s also important to know the convenience factor. Bottle feeding requires mixing the formula, which is not something that can be easily done while traveling or in similar situations. Breast milk is always ready to go when your baby needs it.
It’s important to understand that while exclusive nursing for at least six months is ideal, not everyone’s life or job allows for this. It’s more important that you aim to get your baby as much breast milk as you can, but you can also pump or use formula as needed. Your pediatrician can provide guidance for doing so.
